THE HEBRIDEAN SHEEP ON THE CROFT

The Hebridean Sheep on the surrounding croft are an ancient breed of native sheep, descended from Viking stock and originating from the Islands and Highlands of Scotland.

Largely replaced in the nineteenth century by the now common Blackface sheep, as landowners promoted the abolition of the native breed, they survived as a rare breed in only small numbers until the 1970’s, since when they have enjoyed a revival.

This is the first Hebridean flock which was set up on Waternish and arrived on the croft in 1999, there are now more animals at Waternish descended from this flock.

The wool is available to buy on the croft or at Borreraig Park Piping Museum and Shop. The sheepskins from this flock are sold exclusively Borreraig Park, in Glendale.
